Veneers have allowed countless patients to conceal even extensive dental defects to achieve beautiful new smiles. These appliances are typically placed over two appointments, and they can address a wide range of issues such as chips, cracks, gaps, stains, and misshapenness. However, you may be curious about how you can expect these devices to feel before you schedule a consultation for the treatment. Here’s a brief overview of what it’s like to wear veneers as well as how they are placed.

What Is the Veneer Placement Process Like?

The process of placing veneers takes as few as two appointments. During the first, your dentist will begin by administering a local anesthetic to ensure your comfort before removing a small amount of enamel from the teeth being treated. Then, they will take impressions of your bite that will serve to provide detailed measurements of your smile. You’ll receive a set of temporary veneers to wear while your permanent appliances are being manufactured at a dental lab.

You’ll come back about two weeks later to have your final veneers placed and receive any needed adjustments. While you may experience some mild discomfort and sensitivity in the following days, these issues can typically be addressed with over-the-counter pain medication until they go away on their own. However, contact your dentist if you experience worsening pain or if the discomfort persists after several days.

What Do Veneers Feel Like?

While you might notice a slight difference in texture between your veneers and your natural enamel when you run your tongue along the edges of your teeth, the appliances should feel remarkably natural after you get used to them. You may also develop a slight and temporary lisp when you first receive them due to how they change the dimensions of your teeth. This issue will fade as you get more practice speaking with your veneers, and you can accelerate the process by reading a favorite book out loud and repeating difficult words.

Veneers can be a fantastic way to address many cosmetic dental issues so you can enjoy a beautiful smile that gives you confidence and pride in your appearance. Consulting with your dentist can help you determine if this treatment can be right for you.
