If you’re feeling anxious about white spots on your teeth, you’re not alone. Whether you’re wondering if it’s harmful or are more concerned about your appearance, it’s natural to have questions. Several things can contribute to this dental dilemma, and fortunately, your dentist has cosmetic solutions that can help. Keep reading to learn more about 4 reasons why you may have developed this condition and what you can do about it.

#1: Poor Dental Hygiene

Bacteria overgrowth in your mouth can cause these frustrating white marks on your teeth through a process known as decalcification. It happens when unwanted germs thrive and dissolve areas in your enamel. This can leave behind the chalky, white patches that you’ve noticed. Thankfully, you can prevent additional damage by brushing and flossing your teeth twice daily. You can also consult with your dentist about how to improve your smile. For example, veneers and dental bonding can both be used to mask flaws and discoloration.

#2: Excessive Fluoride

Typically, fluoride is considered a good thing when it comes to your teeth. Dentists use it to strengthen enamel, and many toothpastes and other products are fortified with it. Not only that but many public water sources are also treated with this chemical. Unfortunately, if you’re exposed to too much of it then you could develop a tooth defect known as hypoplasia. This typically occurs in children when their teeth are still developing, and they’ve swallowed too much toothpaste or fluoridated water. One potential resolution is enamel microabrasion in which your dentist removes some of the outer layer of your teeth to even out its appearance.

#3: Medications

Some antibiotics like amoxicillin are known for making an impact on how your mouth builds tooth enamel. Children are particularly affected because their teeth are still developing. The medicine interferes with the way your body absorbs nutrients which interrupts the production of the protective outer layer of your pearly whites. Consult with your dentist about potential solutions, like topical fluoride that can encourage the development of healthy enamel and prevent decay.

#4: Braces

If you had to wear braces for years, your teeth were only partially covered by the metal brackets. It’s not uncommon for patients to notice faint white spots or lines after their orthodontics are removed. It can occur when minerals are stripped from your teeth from acidic foods that you eat that don’t reach under the surface of your bonded braces. If you still have braces on, clean them thoroughly as frequently as possible. This prevents food debris from getting trapped and causing damage.

Thankfully, you don’t have to live with blemished teeth forever! Contact your dentist today and you could soon have a beautifully toned grin.
